About IHMA:

IHMA assists Australian Apprentices/Trainees and International Students achieve a transition into life and study in Australia that may result in greater employability prospects in the Australian hospitality industry via the utilisation of Student Support Services and processes which include:

• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

• Structured on-the-job training
• Full time and intensive method training

IHMA has an aim to achieve outcomes expected of traditional time served apprentices. Importantly, IHMA is a strong proponent of exposure to real commercial pressures to assist students gain real workplace competence in a range of cuisines and circumstances.

IHMA students must be at least 16 years of age (18 years of age for international students). All IHMA students are treated as adults and must act and work like adults to achieve the outcomes set out in IHMA courses. IHMA courses hold more units of competence and require more time to be spent on most units of competence, far exceeding the AQTF requirements for their particular structure. Students are therefore required to contribute 100% to their own development while with IHMA. IHMA does not tolerate truancy, poor manners, poor behavior and/or low achievement. Students looking for a cozy ride in a taxi cab or time behind a popular convenience store counter should look elsewhere as:

• Additional costs are incurred by students for 'make-up' classes if students fail to attend theory or practical classes as per the prescribed schedule
• A positive trade assessment (comprehensive capstone assessment) is required at the completion of each course
• IHMA expects students to complete all competency units with IHMA and does not in any way encourage students to complete competency units or parts of competency units with other providers even though students may be legally permitted - IHMA reserves the right to non-credentially assess any student in any competency unit or parts of competency units specifically required as part of their course whether or not the unit/s assessed were undertaken with IHMA.

One major goal of IHMA is to assist students that may not have met with expected training outcomes due to circumstances faced with another training provider. IHMA utilises a process of non-credential assessments, panel testing and closely supervised workplace simulations to establish the level of ability attained by a student at any point in their training. A gap analysis outcome is translated into training or workplace experience deficiencies and these are dealt with in a structured manner to bridge the identified gap.

IHMA courses and processes have been designed to meet the expectations of Australian employers and therefore allow participants make a valuable contribution to the hospitality industry, the Australian economy and community.
